I was inspired to begin an MA in Publishing by feminist presses such as Virago, Medusa and The Women’s Press. During my studies I began to write for the women’s literary magazine For Books’ Sakeand eventually met Lynn Michell at The Feminist Library. I had originally intended to write a profile of Linen Press for For Books’ Sakebut Lynn and I quickly found common ground in a shared love of women’s writing.
Post-graduation I have been lucky enough to find a job in the industry but when the chance to read submissions for Linen Press came up I jumped at it. Since coming on board I’ve realised exactly how many gifted, unpublished, female writers there are and how important Linen Press is. The 2010 VIDA statistics and Kira Cochrane’s 2011 study in The Guardin, Why British Public Life is Dominated by Men, show that female writers are still woefully under represented. Without publishers like Linen Press and magazines like For Books’ Sake many talented voices will continue to go unheard.
